Residents of the Lebanese village of Dhayra, located in the Tyre District of southern Lebanon, lost their homes as a result of Israeli airstrikes that began in October 2023. They now live in a makeshift displaced persons center on the campus of the Lebanese-German University in Tyre. Their future is uncertain. They have no idea when—or even if—they will be able to return home, let alone whether it will be possible to repair their war-torn houses or build new ones.
Furthermore, they do not know how long they will be able to remain in this temporary accommodation. Unity, the strength of their families and community, and their love for Lebanon give them resilience.
Lodi, Zahraa, Amal, Zeinab, Ahman, Khaleb, Bob, Latifa, Nadja, Muhamed, Murab, and others are essentially living day by day, yet they have not lost hope. Despite everything, they have not forgotten to smile and to find joy in the little things, and they are grateful for every bit of humanitarian aid.
Dhayra was targeted (October, 2023) in an artillery strike utilizing U.S.-supplied white phosphorus smoke munitions, causing civilian injuries, respiratory damage, and the destruction of homes. The village suffered extensive damage and controlled demolitions during the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. As of September 2026, the situation in southern Lebanon remains dangerous.
